Kingston man sentenced for assaulting mother of his children

KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A Kingston man was sentenced to more than seven years in state prison for assaulting the mother of his children in April of last year. Carlos Caal-Chub, 30, was sentenced Tuesday after an Ulster County jury convicted him of assaulting and stalking the victim.

In April, Caal-Chub was convicted of repeatedly assaulting the mother of his children on April 20, 2024. According to officials, he reportedly punched her two times in the head while she tried to de-escalate an argument at a barbeque in Kingston.

Then, when the victim tried to call police, Caal-Chub snatched her phone away. Investigators said the woman returned to their shared house on Robert Street in Ulster and locked the main entrance, trying to gather her children and her belongings in order to distance them from Caal-Chub.

Caal-Chub reportedly used a hammer to break into the house through a basement door. It was determined during the trial, he then advanced toward the victim and beat her until she was unconscious, all while the woman was holding their infant child.

Caal-Chub also shoved and injured their two oldest kids during the incident. He was indicted on multiple charges on April 25, 2024.

On April 9 of this year, Caal-Chub was found guilty of the following charges:

• Second-degree assault
• First-degree stalking
• Third-degree criminal mischief
• Third-degree assault
• Second-degree unlawful imprisonment
• Three counts of endangering the welfare of a child

In court Tuesday, he was sentenced to at least seven years in prison.

Officials said he was sentenced to six years for the assault and stalking charges, to run concurrently with each other, as well as one and 1/3 years to four years for the criminal mischief charge, which will run consecutively to the six years. He was also sentenced to one year for the remaining charges, to run concurrently with all sentences.

"The investigation, indictment, and prosecution of this case and today’s sentence strongly reinforce the message that domestic violence is evil in any community and we all have a responsibility to make sure that those who commit it are held to account," Ulster County District Attorney Emmanuel C. Nneji said.

The defendant was represented by Kingston attorney William Pretsch. The case was prosecuted by Senior Felony Assistant District Attorney Luba Reznikova.
