Tottenham hit with five-figure fine for ‘simply unacceptable, hugely offensive’ fan actions
Tottenham Hotspur have been hit with a significant fine by the Football Association after instances of homophobic chanting from their travelling supporters in an away clash in September of last year.
The issue pertains to Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-0 win at Old Trafford in September of last year, which was one of the most memorable results of the season for the Lilywhites.
However, the result was marred by some incidents in the crowd, with Kick It Out reporting two instances of homophobic chanting during the game.
According to Football.London, the first one was directed from the travelling Spurs fans to Mason Mount in the 49th minute and then further derogatory homophobic chants with references to Mikel Arteta were heard again in the 79th minute.
FA release statement about Tottenham’s fine
In their statement, the FA have revealed that Spurs have been fined £75,000 for two breaches of Rule E21 in relation to “crowd control misconduct” during the clash at Old Trafford.
Their statement reads: “It was alleged that Tottenham Hotspur FC failed to ensure its spectators and or supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters or followers) conduct themselves in an orderly fashion and don’t use words or otherwise behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting way with either an express or implied reference to sexual orientation around both the 49th and 79th minutes.
“Tottenham Hotspur FC admitted both charges, and an independent Regulatory Commission imposed an action plan, £150,000 fine and a warning. An independent Appeal Board reduced the fine to £75,000 following an appeal by the club.”
Spurs have condemned the behaviour and taken action
Football.London point out that Spurs were made aware of the allegations on the day of the match by Proud Lilywhites and immediately released a statement about the incident.
The club stated that the homophobic nature of the chants was “simply unacceptable, hugely offensive and no way to show support for the team”.
Further, Tottenham also made plans for the subsequent Premier League away fixture at Brighton to fit stewards with body cameras in an effort to proactively deal with anyone caught shouting those slurs.
