This Original Devil Wears Prada Star Is Not Returning For The Sequel

A role in The Devil Wears Prada is one many would kill for, but one original cast member is officially out of style.

In 2024, news of a sequel to the iconic film echoed across the internet. Fans were thrilled to learn that Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci would all be reprising their roles in the now-confirmed sequel.

However, some may also be quietly relieved to hear that Anne Hathaway’s onscreen love interest Nate Cooper, played by actor Adrian Grenier, won’t be returning, according to Entertainment Weekly.

 The original 2006 film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel, has long sparked speculation about its inspiration.

Weisberger, a former assistant to Anna Wintour, offered an inside look at a fictional fashion world ruled by Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep. For years, fans have drawn comparisons between Priestly and AnnWintour herself.

In December of last year, the outgoing Vogue editor addressed the long-standing speculation.

“[It’s] for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly,” she said.

Wintour, who recently stepped down after 37 years as editor-in-chief of Vogue, also noted that tales of her public persona don’t interest her. Her focus, she said, remains firmly on the “creative aspect” of her work. 

As for the sequel, the plot will reportedly centre on Miranda Priestly’s battle to keep a struggling magazine afloat, while squaring off against her former assistant, played by Emily. Details of how Anne Hathaway’s character will factor into the story are not clear yet.

On Monday via Instagram, 20th Century Studios announced the movie is in production, and is slated for release next year, with one intriguing new addition to the cast.
