Leading from the front, captain Shubman Gill contributed a phenomenal 430 runs 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second. With a total of 585 runs in just two Tests, Gill is now the highest run-scorer of the ongoing series. India’s total at Edgbaston also set a new national record, surpassing their previous best of 916 runs against Australia in the 2004 Sydney Test.

With 1,014 runs, India has the fourth-highest total in Test cricket history. With 1,121 runs against the West Indies in 1930 at Kingston, Jamaica, England topped the chart. Second on the list is Australia’s 1,028 against England in the 1934 Test, followed by Pakistan’s 1,078 against India in the 2006 Faisalabad Test. The third-highest total is the Oval Test. In 1969, Australia reached the 1,000-run milestone once more in a match against the West Indies in Sydney. Sixth on the list is South Africa’s 1,011 against England in the Durban Test in 1939.

India sets record for most runs in first two Tests

India’s combined total of 1,849 runs in the first two Tests of the five-match series is now the highest ever by any team in the opening two games of a Test series, highlighting the strength and depth of their batting line-up. In the first Test at Leeds, four Indian players notched up centuries, including Rishabh Pant, who scored hundreds in both innings.

India set their second-highest fourth-innings target ever

At Edgbaston, India posted 587 in the first innings and declared their second innings at 427/6, setting a huge target of 608 for England the second-highest India have ever set in the fourth innings and also the second-largest target England have faced at home.
