Mariners Game #90 Preview: 7/6, Pirates at Seattle

Hope you enjoyed the seven total runs scored over this series’ first two games, because that may be all you get. This afternoon, George Kirby faces off against Paul Skenes, and the baseline expectation is that offense will be hard to come by. On the other hand, Kirby has only looked quite right a couple times this year after missing the first quarter of the season on the Injured List with a shoulder issue, and the 2025 Mariners’ offense has had a knack for handing out Ls to Cy Young candidates. Tarik Skubal, Nathan Eovaldi, Garrett Crochet, Max Meyer, and Michael King have all taken losses to the M’s this year.
Lineups
With the day game after the night game, Cal Raleigh gets a day out of the crouch and will DH today. For those who’ve been concerned about how many miles are getting logged on Cal’s knees, this homestand has been encouraging. Of the seven games this homestand, Cal will have caught just four of them, getting two DH days as well as a full day off. That comes on top of his having DHed on the final game of the road trip before the home stand started. Over on the Pirates’ side, they’ll also use their backup catchers today, 2021’s first-overall pick Henry Davis. And in further symmetry, both regular third basemen will get the day off today as well.
