TSA Breaks Silence on Major Rule Change
Earlier this week a report emerged suggesting passengers at all U.S. airports would no longer need to take off their shoes while going through Transportation Security Administration screening.
Following the terrorist attack in New York City that left thousands dead, travelers have been forced to remove their shoes while going through screening. TSA PreCheck members were allowed to skirt the rule even though modern screening technology could have made it so no one had to untie a shoe.
That time has finally come. On Tuesday, July 8, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced a new policy which will allow passengers traveling through domestic airports to keep their shoes on while passing through security screening at TSA checkpoints.
“Ending the ‘Shoes-Off’ policy is the latest effort DHS is implementing to modernize and enhance traveler experience across our nation’s airports,” Secretary Noem said in a statement provided by the TSA.
“We expect this change will drastically decrease passenger wait times at our TSA checkpoints, leading to a more pleasant and efficient passenger experience. As always, security remains our top priority. Thanks to our cutting-edge technological advancements and multi-layered security approach, we are confident we can implement this change while maintaining the highest security standards. This initiative is just one of many the Trump administration is pursuing to usher in the President’s vision for a new Golden Age of American travel.”
While the TSA is relaxing screening for one aspect, the travel administration made it clear passengers must still clear identity verification, Secure Flight vetting, and other processes.
The new change should cut down on long wait times as travelers attempt to make their way through the screening area and to their respective flights on time.
