Jimmy Kimmel's Profane Response to 'Late Show' Cancellation
Jimmy Kimmel had a profane reaction to news of The Late Show’s cancellation on Thursday (via Variety).
On Thursday’s episode, Late Show host Stephen Colbert announced that the next season of the long-running talk show would be its last. CBS’s decision to cancel the program was a “purely financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,” the company said. Shortly after the episode aired, Kimmel took to his Instagram Stories to make his opinion known. “Love you, Stephen,” Kimmel wrote over a video of Colbert’s announcement. “F--k you and all your Sheldons, CBS.”
In a statement, CBS said that the show’s cancellation “is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.” However, some have posited that the cancellation has something to do with the $16 million settlement that Paramount recently awarded the U.S. president over allegations that it deceptively edited an interview with then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris, a suit Paramount once called “meritless.”
After Kimmel’s post, Parks and Rec creator Mike Schur took to BlueSky with a more explicit denunciation of CBS and Paramount’s decision. “When media companies cancel late-night shows to appease fascist presidents, America f---ing ends,” Schur opined. “The number one way to explain America working properly is by saying ‘comedians can make fun of the president on TV.’ A good way to explain fascism is ‘the president forces companies to fire those comedians as a condition of allowing them to conduct business.’”
The Late Show airs Monday through Friday at 11:35 p.m. local time on CBS.
