Trader Joe’s New Item Makes Meal Prep a Cinch
Trader Joe’s is the king of dropping new products that may seem a bit silly, but the genius marketing reels us in - and the deliciousness keeps us coming back. Whether it’s a bag of deli sandwich-flavored chips, hot honey fudge or carnival fun cake fries, their “what’s new” section has me making a long grocery list and scheduling a TJ’s trip ASAP.
One of Trader Joe’s latest creations is Sandwich Starters. It’s a package of 6 pre-sliced sandwich “buns”, made as a vehicle to build the sandwich of your dreams. Their main selling point is that the buns are connected, so you can make a mini or a large sandwich, depending on how hungry you are. “Because they can. Not a slice of bread, not a sub, not a croissant or a roll… but a Sandwich Starter. Okay Trader Joe’s!” teased one Instagram follower.
It looks similar to focaccia bread, with the tender divots on the top, baked with olive oil and sea salt. We imagine it’d make a yummy base for a caprese-style sandwich, but fans say you can slather and stack pretty much anything on it and it's going to be delicious. And each 14-ounce package is only $3.49.
We love the sandwich ideas floating around. “I used them to make a little gyro sandwich and it came out so good! Use the feta spread, cooked gyro meat, and super super thin slices of cucumber. You could also add pickled onions!”, one Reddit fan noted.

“I roasted some marinated, thinly-sliced tofu and used it as “meat”. Then I added sliced cherry tomatoes, spinach dressed in balsamic vinaigrette, thinly sliced radishes, and a piece of the basil garlic Monterey Jack cheese melted on top. Would definitely buy these again!”, said another person. We’re drooling after both of these suggestions.
Overall, fans seem to really like the texture and taste of the bread. “The Sandwich Starters are so soft”, one person said. “Even if you put them in [the] fridge they stay fluffy”, exclaimed another.
We like the sounds of the Sandwich Starters, silly name or not, so we’ll be adding them to our grocery list.
