Helen Mirren Says Tomatoes Are 'Bisexual', Shares a 'Tip' For Growing Them
Helen Mirren is sharing the most hilarious gardening tip.
The 80-year-old actress was a guest on the Monday (August 11) episode of The Tonight Show and she shared a gardening tip with host Jimmy Fallon.
According to Helen, she’s done her research and found out that tomatoes are “bisexual,” knowledge that she says has helped her to grow the plant.

“Incidentally, I just want to give you a tip about growing tomatoes,” Helen said after she and costar Pierce Brosnan tried fresh salsa during the show.
“You know the little flower? Well, a good way to get a tomato out of a flower is you have to tremble the flower like this,” Helen said and demonstrated the action by waving her finger in the air.
When Jimmy joked that he wasn’t going to do that to the flowers of his tomato plants, Helen insisted that her garden tip wasn’t just her playing around.
“A tomato is a bisexual thing, you see,” Helen told Jimmy, getting a shocked reaction from the audience.
Helen went on to explain that she had researched tomato plants because of her own gardening troubles. The actress went on to explain that her research had revealed to her that tomatoes have “complete flowers,” meaning that they self-pollinate when the flowers are disturbed by the wind or by a gardener shaking them gently.
“I looked it up very recently because I had a problem with my tomatoes. It’s bisexual, so you have to go around to each tomato, each flower, and go like this,” Helen explained and demonstrated again.
