UNRWA Warns Gaza, West Bank Face Severe Food and Security Crisis

UNRWA reports that millions in Gaza and the West Bank face critical food insecurity and malnutrition, with restricted access hampering urgent humanitarian aid delivery.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned that humanitarian conditions in Gaza and the West Bank remain dire, with millions facing severe food and security threats.

On Saturday, December 27, UNRWA reported that, based on the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), around 1.6 million people in Gaza are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity.

Between December 1 and 15, more than 3,000 children were examined at UNRWA health centers, of whom 315 were identified as malnourished, highlighting the growing health crisis.

Israeli military control covers more than half of Gaza, with forces reportedly operating beyond the so-called “Yellow Line,” limiting humanitarian access in several areas.

The “Yellow Line” is an unofficial boundary, and its recent westward shift has restricted UNRWA teams from reaching essential facilities, exacerbating the challenges of delivering aid.

UNRWA officials stressed that the combination of restricted access, conflict, and economic hardship is worsening food insecurity and putting vulnerable populations, particularly children, at risk.

Humanitarian organizations are calling for immediate measures to ensure safe access for aid delivery, citing the urgent need to prevent further deterioration in living conditions.

Without swift intervention, experts warn that malnutrition and food insecurity could escalate further, threatening the survival and wellbeing of thousands of families in Gaza and the West Bank.

International actors have been urged to support UNRWA and other aid agencies to maintain critical services and avert a deepening humanitarian catastrophe.
