Massive Waves ‘Over 30ft’ Slam the Great Lakes (Video)
The Great Lakes, perhaps the most unconventional surfing destination in the continental United States (if not the world), have been seeing a surplus of swell this winter season.
Most recently, with storm conditions hitting the Midwest, the freshwater bodies of water were swirling with wind, thus creating large swells. Like on Lake Superior.
Below, check out the scenes from Presque Isle Park in Marquette, Michigan.
Crowds flocked to see the massive waves, which local news reported:
“The expectations were driven by forecasts from the National Weather Service, predicting waves on Lake Superior steadily around 15-feet with potential for some to reach over 30.”
For locals, the scenes were something they’ve never experienced.
“We’ve seen pretty big waves up here before, but nothing this big,” said one.
“I’ve lived in Marquette my whole life, and I’ve never seen it like this before,” said another.
Meanwhile, it wasn’t all lump and bump and victory at sea…well, lake. Elsewhere, conditions on the Great Lakes looked much more manageable from a surfing perspective, with some unfathomably dreamy waves peeling through the freshwater sandbars.
In a post from Surfline, via the Great Lakes Surfer’s Journal, they described:
“Deep in America’s heartland, thousands of miles from any ocean, surfers are chasing swell across the Great Lakes in temperatures that’ll give you an ice cream headache like you wouldn’t believe.”
It’s also not the first time, recently, that The Great Lakes have seen some epic surfing conditions. Just a few days ago, a local duo of dread-headed brothers, the Skelton Bros, surfed some slushie waves on Lake Erie. And around the same time, footage was shown of what some were calling “20-foot” waves smashing into a lighthouse caked in ice.
And it appears this isn’t the end; there’s more action on the way as the season trudges on.
Per the Great Lakes Surfer’s Journal: “Wild couple of days. More to come.”
