Thomas Frank reveals interesting reason he handed Ben Davies a rare Tottenham start
Thomas Frank has explained his decision to hand Ben Davies a start and has revealed what he thought about Tottenham man’s performance.
While one did expect a few rotations against Sunderland, given that Tottenham Hotspur played at Brentford on Thursday, there were several surprises in Frank’s starting eleven.
One of those was the Dane’s decision to start Wilson Odobert as the number ten, in light of Xavi Simons’ suspension.
Frank also decided to hand Mathys Tel his first start since October, but the biggest surprise was seeing Ben Davies making his first start of the season.
Thomas Frank was pleased with Tottenham veteran Ben Davies
The 32-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has been out with a hamstring injury for much of the campaign.
He produced a typically solid but unspectacular display against Sunderland and got on the scoresheet, turning home Micky van de Ven’s shot from close range.
When asked why he started Davies against Sunderland, Frank responded to Football.London: “It was nice that he scored the goal! I felt for this game that we needed a left-footer, so that was the biggest reason.
“I think in the build-up and he had two fantastic passes going forward, also balls in behind and gave that calmness, plus a bit of leadership and helping Matty in front of him. And then we’re playing five games in a short amount of time.”
Spurs want to sign another left-back this month
According to reports, Udogie’s injury issues have forced Tottenham to prioritise signing a left-sided defender.
Alasdair Gold has claimed that Spurs want to replace the whole of their left side during this transfer window and the next.
In fact, reports indicate that Tottenham have already had an offer rejected for Santos left-back Souza, and it remains to be seen if the Lilywhites go back in with an improved offer for the Brazilian.
