NASA Postpones Spacewalk on International Space Station To Deal With Medical Concern With One of the Astronauts – An Early Return to Earth Is Being Considered for Crew-11

Yesterday (7), NASA announced it was postponing a spacewalk scheduled for today (8) because of a ‘medical concern’ regarding one of the crew members.
No additional information was provided about the issue or name the astronaut involved.

CNN reported:
“’Due to medical privacy, it is not appropriate for NASA to share more details about the crew member’, the space agency said in a statement. ‘The situation is stable. NASA will share additional details, including a new date for the upcoming spacewalk, later’.”
Astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman were going to work on a power channel where a new solar array is set to be installed.
“The spacewalk would be a first for Cardman, a 38-year-old geobiologist who was selected for the astronaut corps in 2017.
Fincke, who has been an astronaut since 1996, has participated in nine prior spacewalks. Venturing outside the space station again would make him the sixth American astronaut to conduct 10 spacewalks, said Bill Spetch, NASA’s operations integration manager for the orbiting laboratory, during a Wednesday news briefing.”

NASA has further indicated that there is now the possibility of an early return for the Crew-11 astronauts.
Ars Technica reported:
“NASA has never ordered a medical evacuation from space before, but the option has always been available at the International Space Station with lifeboats ready for activation.
[…] The situation on the ISS appeared more serious after a second statement released by NASA late Wednesday night. NASA confirmed the medical issue involved a single crew member and said the person was stable. Then, NASA said managers were considering bringing home the ailing crew member on a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.”
The Crew-11 was expected to return to Earth around February 20.
