Did Ali Wong and Bill Hader Break Up?
Unfortunately, I come to you today with the news that love is dead. After two years together, comedy hotties Ali Wong and Bill Hader have broken up, per People. Apparently, between work and family obligations — Wong has two children, and Hader has three — they just couldn’t find the time to be together. “It was too difficult to make the relationship work with Ali’s upcoming stand-up tour and Bill’s various film and TV projects this year,” a source told People. Did they even consider how this might affect me, their parasocial daughter?
The good news is it sounds as though there’s no bad blood between these two — the source said things were “very amicable” and that Wong and Hader are “very much friends and still in touch.” Now, “they’re focusing on their work and kids while continuing to support and root for each other,” the source added.
Wong and Hader first briefly dated in the fall of 2022 after Wong separated from her now ex-husband, Justin Hakuta. Though it didn’t last long, they rekindled things a few months later in April 2023. In her 2024 Netflix comedy special, Single Lady, Wong revealed how Hader first wooed her after news of her divorce from Hakuta went public. Apparently, Hader kicked things off over text after getting Wong’s number from a mutual friend. “Hey, Ali. I just happened to hear the news of your divorce today, and I gotta tell you … I’m excited,” Wong recalled Hader telling her. “I am, Ali, because, look, I have had a crush on you forever, and I actually told my best friend years ago that you were my dream girl. And I know this sounds crazy, but, uh, I want you to be my girlfriend.”
Unfortunately for Hader, Wong had just dropped $250 on an annual subscription to a dating app, she said in the special, and she wasn’t about to let that go to waste. But after Hader surprised her with flower bouquets in various European cities while she was traveling for work, she started to see the appeal. “I told all my girlfriends, and they were like, ‘Oh my God, that is so sweet. I am so jealous,’” she recalled. Eventually, they figured things out and went on to kiss at a bunch of awards shows. At least we’ll always have that Emmys smooch.
