New 'Game of Thrones' Spinoff Could Run Longer Than the Original Series
Premiering in April of 2011 and running eight seasons until its conclusion in 2019, Game of Thronesis the most popular show in HBO history.
The show has already produced one spinoff series titled House of the Dragon, which has also been impressively popular. Now, HBO is set to debut a new spinoff series, and it could go even longer than the original series.
On Jan. 18, HBO is set to debut its new Game of Thrones spinoff series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Before it even premieres, it sounds like there are some big plans for the future of the series.
What is 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'?
Based on writer George RR Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg fantasy novellas, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a six-episode series prequel to the original series that takes place roughly 90 years before Game of Thrones.
The show tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, and his young squire Aegon V Targaryen, known as Egg.
Martin has already written three novellas of source material for the show, and the show has already been greenlit for a second season, which is expected to debut in 2027.
Longer Than 'Game of Thrones?'
While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a spinoff prequel to Game of Thrones, it sounds like there's a chance it could ultimately be longer than the original series.
Currently, Martin has only published three of his Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, on which the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series is based. However, creator and showrunner Ira Parker recently revealed that Martin actually has as many as 12 outlines for future books.
“He has shared with me about 10 to 12 more little outlines for books, for novellas, taking Dunk and Egg all the way through their life,” Parker told The National during a recent interview.
If HBO makes one series per novella, which currently seems to be the plan, then A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could ultimately end up longer than Game of Thrones, which ran eight seasons.
For now, though, Parker and the HBO team are currently focused on one season at a time.
“Right now, we’re focused on one, and we’ll see how the world responds to that. We’re making two at the moment,” Parker said. “Hopefully, everybody likes it and we get to keep doing these. Certainly, I love doing it. I love writing in this world, and it’s a wonderful story. So, I hope we get to make as many of these as possible.”
