'Miserable' GOP future has MAGA voters quietly ditching Trump: analysis

MAGA voters are beginning to abandon Donald Trump and the Republican Party as their positions look to be untenable to voters, according to an analyst.

A number of voters who consider themselves backers of MAGA made it clear they would rather quietly remove their allegiance to the GOP than carry on backing the president. Writing in Salon, columnist Amanda Marcotte suggested polling numbers show people are increasingly uncomfortable with Trump's actions.

She wrote, "Polling suggests that a small but important number of Trump voters are trying to pull an Irish exit, abandoning the coalition quietly rather than continuing the miserable task of pretending what he’s doing is okay."

Marcotte went on to suggest this may not be a permanent decline, but that MAGA voters were seemingly more aware of recent actions made by Trump and his administration.

She added, "Trump’s popularity has always been driven more by loathing of the left than genuine infatuation with his repellent personality.

"A lot of his voters have always found it easier to paint him as a necessary evil to put down the fictional 'woke mob' than attempt to pretend, at least to those outside their tribe, that the man has any redeeming qualities. If Trump can turn progressive protesters into a scary villain, that could work to give people the cover to rejoin the MAGA movement.

"There’s no telling if it will work this time, but there is reason to hope it won’t. [Renee] Good’s killing is already taxing the ability of Republican voters to pretend they’re good people while they support the administration’s actions. That Trump started the chaos in Minneapolis is also indisputable."

The GOP has since been urged by a political analyst to ax Trump entirely, with impeachment "not enough."

The Daily Beast's Janna Brancolini wrote, "Even by Trump’s standards, this letter is so dangerous and so delusional that there is no longer any question that the president is mentally 'unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,' as laid out in the 25th Amendment to the Constitution.

"It is clearly not rational to start a war because your feelings got hurt by not winning a prize that you were not even eligible for. It is certainly not rational to sabotage the country’s national security — emboldening Russia and China — over those hurt feelings."
