‘Dividing and conquering’: Mayor of Seattle proudly declares no fraud probes into Somali scammers
In the wake of allegations of massive fraud among Somali-run daycares in Minnesota, the mayor of Seattle, Washington, says she won’t seek any investigation of Somali fraud in her city.
An interview by KOMO-TV with Democrat Mayor Katie Wilson this month is getting fresh attention on social media, as reporter Chris Daniels asked the mayor: “Have you asked anyone to follow up on the fraud claims, either to the Department of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs or SPD [Seattle Police Department]?”
“No,” Wilson responded.
“So there’s, as far as you’re concerned right now, there’s no reason to suggest there’s any sort of fraud?” Daniels pressed.
“I don’t,” the mayor replied. “This whole issue is not really about fraud, right? It’s about dividing and conquering. It’s about making an immigrant community a target, right? There’s no reason to assume, based on the identity of a daycare operator, that their small business is doing anything wrong.”

“I don’t think it needs to be explained why it’s problematic to have random people showing up to daycares,” Wilson added. “And I think the fear in the Somali community is real. The fear in immigrant communities are real. So we’re taking that very seriously.”

On Jan. 1, Wilson announced: “I stand with the Somali childcare providers who have experienced targeted harassment, and condemn the surveillance campaign promoted by extremist influencers.”

She issued a written statement indicating: “In Seattle we believe in solidarity, and our city will not tolerate anyone who is trying to intimidate, harass or film Somali childcare providers. Such behavior is unacceptable and puts children and families at risk.”
