Donald Trump compared to the Very Hungry Caterpillar over his threats to seize Greenland
The Belgian prime minister has told the World Economic Forum ‘enough is enough’ and Europe must fight back against ‘hungry caterpillar’ Donald Trump.
Bart de Wever made the remarks comparing the US president to the children’s book character after Trump said the world will ‘find out’ how far he’ll go over seizing Greenland.
De Wever told a panel on the future of European security in Davos: ‘My feeling is that the sweet-talking is over. You reach the point where sweet-talking and sweet-talking is counterproductive.
‘It only encourages them to go a step further – it’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar.’
De Wever said that Europe must also arm itself to combat the increasing threat of US military intervention in Greenland.
He said: ‘We have to wake up, we have to rearm, we have to integrate our market, and we have to seek new alliances.
‘He can make us slaves, and we are slaves then,’ he added, criticising European subservience to President Trump.
Former NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen also warned that Greenland’s seizure would signal the end of the historic military alliance.
Trump has also ramped up threats to seize Greenland on his Truth Social platform, where he posted an AI image yesterday of himself planting an American flag into Greenland.
Trump is expected to arrive in Davos later today, and his Greenland ambitions are due to be a top priority for European leaders.
French President Macron has already joined De Wever in calling out ‘bully’ Trump at Davos, delivering a speech advocating for European ‘rule of law’.
Polish PM Donald Tusk has also spoken out, as well as Canadian leader Mark Carney.
Trump told reporters outside the White House this morning that it will be an interesting and successful trip to Davos, but admitted that he has ‘no idea what’s going to happen’.
