He Tests 3 of The Weirdest Fins Ever and The Results Are Shocking

In his latest vlog Zack Flores explores three of his wildest single fins while trying out a new blade and breaking down the performance of each. Beyond the clickbait title, he offers some core historical education and lays down some great surfing in the process.

Fresh off a sponsor change from Katin to Cedar, the buff and tough Flores reminds us why he's one of California's premier stylists no matter what he's riding...even with a fin that doesn't look like it should work.

Zack explains, "I just finished a new single fin, so instead of surfing it normally, I decided to test the three weirdest single fins I own." He starts with the Greenough Power Blade, a fin I have often wondered about myself, and considers it the "baseline" for the others. Zack drops some knowledge on Greenough's story and significance. Of course, it's not much of a surprise to see it going great with his new board.

The second is a crazy sawtooth-looking thing that was made via 3D-printing CAD with the design prompt of being "hyper hydrodynamic". The computer-designed fin worked better than anyone thought it would, although Buff Lord found it to be too "loose, unstable, and kinda sketchy". At the end of the day computers don't surf--Zack does.

Finally, he paddles out on a Cheyne Horan winged fin and explains how the wild-looking design was Cheyne's way to elevate the performance of single fin design to try and keep it relevant. "As far as fins go, this is the final boss in single fin experimentation. It is, quite possibly, the weirdest fin I have ever seen. I'm actually super excited to try it."

From the very first wave it looks super smooth while Zack trims and turns with control. and ultimately wins the Buff Seal of Approval. "Somehow, this fin is the winner--I am super shocked. I didn't think it would work very well. Cheyne Horan made them work in Hawaii, like pumping through barrels there."

As for Zack's new sponsor, Cedar is new to me but seem to be making high-quality workwear with a clean aesthetic from the Pacific Northwest. We're excited to see what comes next.
