Netflix Surf Drama ‘Breakers’ Begins Filming in Western Australia
Netflix has landed in Western Australia, with a new show about surfing in the works.
Filming for Breakers has kicked off in West Oz, with actor Antony Starr (most notable from his role as “Homelander” in Amazon Prime’s The Boys) in the lead role.
What’s it about? Per Deadline: “Breakers (aka Red Bluff) follows two best friends from the U.S. who go backpacking in Australia and are soon drawn into a seemingly perfect community of surfers led by a charismatic but mysterious figure, Brando, played by Starr.”
According to an announcement from the Government of Western Australia, “The 8-part series is the biggest production to take place in Western Australia and is estimated to employ over 100 Western Australians and inject more than $19 million into the WA economy.”
Other actors involved have yet to be revealed.
It’s also not the first time, recently, that a production was shot in Western Australia. The new show comes off the heels of The Surfer, the psychedelic fever-dream of a film starring Nicolas Cage eating rats, fighting with a local surf gang, and slowly losing his mind.
During the shooting of that film, Cage actually rented a house from former world number two, and West Oz surf star, Taj Burrow. Director of The Surfer, Lorcan Finnegan, told us:
“The place we shot in – Yallingup, Western Australia – is an actual surf town. It’s got a few breaks that are quite famous. Nic actually stayed in Taj Burrow’s house. It overlooks the beach. That all kind of helped. We needed everyone to be on our side, so we could surf and shoot there. A lot of local surfers ended up working on the film as either cast, or extras, or helping with locations. It’s a fairly remote town. The owner of the local hotel is in the movie; loads of locals are in the film. So, I think that really helped.”
As the announcement read from the local government, Breakers will also employ locals. No word yet if Taj is involved. Filming is set to wrap on the new project in June of 2026, then the series will be released on Netflix. Stay tuned.
