Pro-Life Nurse Saves a Baby From Abortion
In a heartfelt hospital encounter, a dedicated pro-life nurse turned a moment of despair into one of hope, persuading a pregnant woman overwhelmed by hyperemesis gravidarum to choose life for her unborn child.
The nurse, who shared her anonymous account with the Quebec Life Coalition, described how she stepped in after the expectant mother, at nine weeks pregnant, expressed a desire to terminate the pregnancy amid exhaustion from relentless vomiting, dehydration and repeated IV insertions.
The woman, supported by her husband during her hospital stay, had been vomiting for two weeks and struggled even to drink water. An unexplained infection required IV antibiotics, but complications arose when the IV infiltrated due to dehydration, leading to multiple failed attempts at reinsertion.
Shocked by the patient’s words, which she first shared with another nurse, the pro-life nurse entered the room alone, sat with the patient, listened to her concerns and offered reassurance that the hardships were temporary. She emphasized the pregnancy’s value, saying, “being pregnant is a blessing and that she gets to carry life within her.”

“Not good,” the patient told the nurse when asked how she was doing. “I don’t think I want this pregnancy anymore. I’m tired of all of this. I’ve been poked so many times for this IV and have been so uncomfortable with all the nausea and vomiting. I haven’t been able to eat anything for two weeks, and I just feel awful. I can’t take it anymore. I think I need to terminate this pregnancy.”
The patient voiced fears about her job security after prolonged absence from work and missing her social life, adding, “I just feel like my body is telling me I’m not supposed to have this baby, like that’s why I’m vomiting so much.”
In response, the nurse explained the biological protective role of pregnancy hormones: “Actually, the reason pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting is because of the hormone B-hCG released by the placenta. Its purpose is to tell your immune cells not to attack the baby, but it also has the side effect of nausea and vomiting. So you are experiencing this because your placenta is saying, ‘Don’t attack the baby.’
“”Well, I don’t want to attack my baby,” the patient replied, prompting the nurse to affirm, “Then you don’t want to terminate.”
The patient shared that she was worried she was not ready for this, but the nurse reassured her that she was, that she had already been so strong. By the end of the conversation, the woman smiled, nodded and expressed determination to continue the pregnancy, thanking the nurse for her support.
The nurse, who works in postpartum and prenatal care, later reflected on her gratitude for the chance to counsel the patient and prayed for a healthy outcome.
The incident highlights the life-affirming impact of compassionate intervention in moments of vulnerability, as shared in the nurse’s story published by the pro-life organization.
