Florida Committee Passes Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood Abortion Biz
A Florida House committee has advanced legislation to cut off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood, a key victory for pro-life advocates seeking to protect taxpayers from subsidizing the abortion business and to save more unborn babies’ lives.
The House Health Care Facilities & Systems Subcommittee voted along partisan lines Thursday to approve HB 693, sponsored by Rep. Mike Redondo (R-Miami).
The measure would amend Florida’s Medicaid statutes to prevent payments to any “prohibited entity” under federal law, imposing a one-year ban on Medicaid reimbursements to abortion businessess such as Planned Parenthood.
Michelle Grimsley Shindano, Planned Parenthood Florida Action’s director of policy and government affairs, testified against the bill and said in a statement: “Floridians with Medicaid would be permanently blocked from accessing Planned Parenthood health centers for life-saving screenings, birth control, STI testing and treatment, and overall preventive care. In addition, not being able to accept Medicaid payments in the long-term could force reductions in staffing, hours, and services.”

That ignores the fact that planned Parenthood could continue getting the taxpayer funds if it stopped killing babies in abortions. It also ignores the fact that there are many other doctors and medical clinics patients can choose from other than a place that kills babies.
The Senate Health Policy Committee is scheduled to consider SB 1758 on Monday, though the Senate bill does not currently include the ban on Medicaid payments to prohibited entities.
Pro-life leaders view the bill as a critical step in defunding the abortion giant, especially as Florida has already seen dramatic reductions in abortions following abortion center closures and protective laws.
Data from Florida’s Agency for Healthcare Administration shows 79,812 babies were aborted in 2021, dropping to 44,206 in 2025—a 45% decrease—while the number of abortion clinics fell 16% from 57 to 48 over the same period. Updated data that includes December could lower that percentage, but it’s still a high number that shows babies are saved.
Sarah Neely, chief operating officer of Operation Rescue, highlighted these trends in a recent speech: “In the last 5 years, we have seen the number of clinics in Florida decrease by 16%. That might seem a small number, but small numbers add up over time… In that same time period — the last five years — abortions in Florida have decreased by forty-five percent.”
Operation Rescue President Troy Newman stated: “With the permanent closure of just nine clinics, the state of Florida saw a 45% reduction in the number of babies killed. This is a state with the third highest number of abortion clinics in the nation, right after California and New York. The work is far from over, but more lives are saved every time a clinic closes its door for good. This is why our team works so diligently to expose abortion abuses and to call for the equal enforcement of safety and health regulations at the shoddy abortion businesses we constantly find breaking the law.”
Newman added: “We look forward to seeing even more abortion clinics closed in the state of Florida this year, which will always mean more lives saved.”
The bill’s advancement signals growing momentum for pro-life policies in Florida, where restricting funding to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood could lead to further clinic reductions and more babies saved.
