Munich to host EA Junior Swimming and Junior Artistic Swimming Championships 2026 in 1972 Olympic venue
Munich will host the European Aquatics Junior Swimming and Junior Artistic Swimming Championships in 2026, it has been confirmed.
The EA Junior Swimming Championships are scheduled from July 7 to 12 and the EA Junior Artistic Swimming Championships from June 30 to July 4 – with both taking place at the 1972 Olympic swimming hall.
It will be the first time that the EA Junior Swimming Championships have been staged in Germany in the last 40 years, and the first time this historic venue will have hosted a combined European Junior Championships format for swimming and artistic swimming.
The original announcement that the events were destined for Germany was made in July last year.
““I am very happy to confirm that the European Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships and Artistic Swimming Championships next year will be hosted by Munich,” said European Aquatics President Antonio Silva. “This historic, refurbished venue will offer Europe’s most talented junior aquatics athletes the opportunity to compete in an environment that will promote excellence and sustainability.”
The Munich Swimming Hall was built for the 1972 Olympics and has been extensively modernised. Mark Spitz of the United States won seven gold medals at those Games, with other outstanding gold-medal performances coming from athletes such as Roland Matthes of East Germany and Shane Gould of Australia.
Jan Pommer, CEO of the German Swimming Federation (DSV) commented: “In 2026, Germany, with Munich as the host city, will become the centre of European swimming.
“Awarding two Junior European Championships sends a strong signal for the development of young talent and gives our athletes further momentum on their path to the Olympics.
“At the same time, this double award underscores the importance of our country for the development of elite sports in Europe and beyond.”
Last year’s EA Junior Swimming Championships ran from July 1 to 6 at Samorin in Slovakia, which was making its debut as host of the event, preceding it with the staging of the second U23 Swimming Championships.
Germany was one of only four nations to earn double figures of medals at the EA Junior Swimming Championships, claiming 10, with Lena Ludwig winning gold in the women’s 200m breaststroke.
National coach Stephanie Marx said that artistic swimming has seen a “very positive development” in Germany in recent years, adding: “We believe that hosting the European Junior Championships can further promote this and will additionally motivate our young athletes.”
