The First Blockbuster Movie of 2026 Just Changed Its Release Date — With a Catch
Ryan Gosling's encounter with the unknown is coming sooner than anyone thought. Although March isn't really the summer, in many ways, the summer movie season kicks off this March with the sci-fi epicProject Hail Mary. Based on the smash-hit 2021 Andy Weir novel of the same name, Project Hail Mary is all about a teacher named Ryland Grace (Gosling) headed on a solo space mission to try and find out why the sun is suddenly running out of juice, and if one distant star holds the answer to the problem.
But now, this movie is coming out a bit earlier than anticipated. As the new trailer dropped during Super Bowl LIX, it was also revealed that Project Hail Mary would have screenings a full four days before its planned release date of March 20, 2026. Now, if you move quickly, you'll be able to see the movie on March 16 instead. Here's how.

Just like with Superman in 2025, if you're a member of Amazon Prime, you'll be able to buy special early tickets for Project Hail Mary, which means you can go to the March 16 screenings before the wide release on March 20. To put that in perspective, the movie comes out on a Friday, but this would mean you'd see it on that Monday.
This early release for Superman in 2025 was a huge part of its early box office success, and that was a movie that came out in July. For a March release, this is a huge. Around spring break, Project Hail Mary will be the movie to beat, and now, it seems like its gunning to become the first major blockbuster of the year.
