South Korea’s former interior minister sentenced to 7 years in prison
A South Korean court sentenced former interior minister Lee Sang-min to prison for his role in the failed martial law attempt.
A Seoul Central District Court sentenced former Interior Minister Lee Sang-min to seven years in prison for involvement in the failed December 2024 martial law bid.
Reuters reported the 61-year-old was convicted of participating in an insurrection linked to former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s attempt to impose military rule.
Prosecutors said Lee relayed orders instructing police and fire authorities to cut electricity and water supplies to media organizations during the crisis.
Special prosecutors had sought a 15-year sentence, arguing Lee played a key role in facilitating the attempted power grab.
Lee has been in custody since August after the court approved his arrest warrant during the ongoing investigation.
He is the second former cabinet member convicted over the martial law episode, which triggered political turmoil and protests across South Korea.
