UN Expert Bennett to Present Afghan Women’s Health Report to Rights Council
The UN’s special rapporteur on Afghanistan said he will present a new report next week on the right to health for Afghan women and girls.
Richard Bennett said on Friday in a post on X that he is preparing for the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, following a recent visit to Pakistan.
He said he will present his report on February 26, focusing on the right to health of women and girls in Afghanistan and addressing recent human rights developments.
Bennett, who has been barred by the Taliban from entering Afghanistan, recently met Pakistani officials to discuss the human rights situation during his visit.
The Taliban have imposed sweeping restrictions on rights and freedoms, with women and girls currently barred from most work and secondary education.
In some provinces, additional limits affect access to healthcare, including requirements for a male guardian and restrictions on male doctors treating female patients, despite shortages of female medical staff.
On Friday, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), marking World Social Justice Day, stressed that equal access to services, including healthcare and education, is essential for social justice in Afghanistan.
UNAMA said sustainable peace and development require inclusive participation and non-discriminatory access to basic rights, particularly for women and girls.
Bennett’s upcoming presentation is expected to renew international scrutiny over women’s rights in Afghanistan as global attention turns to the Geneva session.
