Winter Weather Warnings Announced Adding to 4 Feet of Snow, 84 mph Winds

As February comes to a close, spring draws near, but winter isn't over year, and the National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of severe weather across parts of the U.S. Wednesday, Feb. 25, and running through Friday, Feb. 27.

The NWS has announced winter storm warnings and watches for areas of the Midwest and Northeast, with weather experts warning of additional snow in areas that have already been slammed with between 3 and 4 feet of snow in New England.

New England Snow Totals Top 3 Feet, Nearing 4

Specifically, NWS research says to expect a fresh coating of snow in areas that have already gotten between 3 and 4 feet of snow. According to a report from the NWS, with the nor'easter coming to an end, the area of the Northeast that had the highest snow total was reported at T.F. Green International Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island, with a total of 37.9 inches. As for winds, Montauk Point, New York, was estimated to have gotten 84 mph winds during the storm.

They add that, "With several inches of wet, heavy snow on the ground across much of the northeastern U.S., slippery sidewalks and roads aren’t the only things to look out for: shoveling snow can be a health risk as well. Remember to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and move only small amounts with each shovel pass."

Now, a second storm is nearing and set to add a fresh blanket of snow to areas that just got through the nor'easter. The second storm is set to bring snowfall from Wednesday night, Feb. 25, into Thursday, Feb. 26, to the Midwest and the eastern U.S., according to meteorologists at AccuWeather.

"A stripe of snow is possible north of the track, with rain, snow and ice mixing along the southern fringe and plain rain with a risk of thunderstorms farther south posing renewed travel disruptions," AccuWeather tells Men's Journal in an email, "slippery surfaces and operational delays for businesses across affected regions."

Snow Totals Dropped Heaps of Snow to the Northeast and New England

As the snow totals this week, in addition to Warwick, Rhode Island's total of 37.9 inches, North Kingstown, Rhode Island received 36 inches of snow; Boston got 31.8 inches; and North Stonington, Connecticut got 30.8 inches. Wind gusts reported, on top of the 84 mph winds in Montauk Point, New York, include 83 mph in Nantucket, Massachusetts; 77 mph in Wellfleet, MA; and 74 mph in Stony Brook, New York.

According to AccuWeather, "In many areas, this single storm brought more snow than all of last winter combined." So, yes, just as you're digging yourself out of the snow, there's more on the way. But, the good news is that, according to weather experts at the NOAA, the nor'easter is officially over and warmer weather is on tap for early March.
