It’s Official Now. Aston Villa Are In A Serious Slump
It’s official. We’re in a serious slump.
The 0–2 defeat away to Wolverhampton Wanderers felt like confirmation rather than surprise. For the first ten to fifteen minutes, we looked okay. We were organised, compact, reasonably assured in possession. You had a little hope of a good result. And things went south.
From that point on, until the hour mark, we were a shadow of ourselves. Passive, predictable, and far too easy to play against. Wolves weren’t that good. They simply had to be patient, and they were rewarded for it.
The changes on sixty minutes were a welcome relief. Ross Barkley and Leon Bailey on, Douglas Luiz and Jadon Sancho off. A reshuffle, a manager trying to force momentum back in our favour.
Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers were largely anonymous for much of the contest. When your attack force barely influences proceedings, you are going to struggle. Rogers did at least show signs of life in the final seventeen minutes when he shifted over to the left. Suddenly he looked more direct, more involved, more like someone who might actually hurt the opposition. Why did it take so long to see that version of him? Can anyone help me out here?
What makes this slump so frustrating is not just the results, but the sense of hopelessness. We look unsure of ourselves. The intensity that defined us has dipped. The desire in our play has gone. There seems to be no obvious remedy that can change our fortunes.
And yet, that is the challenge facing Emery. He is paid at the highest level to solve problems like this.
Right now though, it is difficult to see the solution from the outside. This is a bad run. A proper one. And unless something shifts quickly, the frustration around this club is only going to grow. UTV
