Tottenham player ratings vs Atletico Madrid feature 1/10 horror show and 7/10 silver lining

0

The full-time whistle has blown in the Champions League match between Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, and it’s time for our player ratings.

Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles in 2026 continued in the Champions League as they lost 5-2 to Atletico Madrid in their round-of-16 first-leg tie.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Antonin Kinsky It was far from the start he had hoped for in goal for Tottenham as he endured a nightmare 16 minutes after a spell riddled with individual errors. 1.

Pedro Porro In the first half, he grabbed Spurs’ only goal after converting from inside the box. In the second half, he delivered a dangerous cross into the box that found Richarlison’s head, but the Brazilian did not convert. He then assisted Tottenham’s second after intercepting a loose Jan Oblak pass and playing Dominic Solanke through. 7.

Cristian Romero The Argentine remained a set-piece threat for Tottenham throughout the game, getting his head to several deliveries. He came close in the first half after a corner, but his header hit the upright. 4.

Kevin Danso Stuck to his assignment and was not at fault for any of the goals in either half. He also offered a long-throw threat throughout the game. 4.

Micky van de Ven It was far from an assured display from the Dutchman, who has struggled for form of late. His slip was directly responsible for Atletico Madrid’s second of the night, while he also looked fortunate to avoid further punishment after a couple of lunging challenges. In the second half, it was a quieter display from van de Ven. 3.

Djed SpenceIn the first half, he picked up an early booking and was barely an attacking threat for most of the game. In the second half, he was the closest Tottenham defender to Julian Alvarez when the Argentine ran from his own half during a sweeping counter-attack, but he was not quick enough to prevent the shot. 3.

Pape Matar Sarr – He came close to scoring an own goal, but Vicario was on hand to keep the effort out, although that action led directly to Atletico Madrid’s fourth of the night. In the second half, he saw more of the ball and managed a few shots from range. 4.

Archie Gray – He grew into the game and saw more of the ball as the match went on. He managed to play a couple of forward passes to start attacks in the second half after a very quiet first 45 minutes. 4.

Mathys Tel He looked lively in before the break and tried a couple of shots from range, but barely threatened Oblak. He was eventually taken off at half-time. 4.

Randal Kolo MuaniIt was a poor opening forty-five from the Frenchman, who had no influence on proceedings and struggled to keep the ball well. It was no surprise he was taken off at the break. 3.

Richarlison The Brazilian showed some fight throughout the first-leg tie. In the first half, his strong hold-up play allowed him to set up Porro’s goal. He later came close to adding to Tottenham’s tally after Porro found him in the box, but his header was dealt with by Oblak, leading to an Atletico Madrid counter-attack that saw Diego Simeone’s men score their fifth. He picked up a yellow card in the second half and will now miss the second leg. 5.

Substitutes

Guglielmo Vicario – He replaced Kinsky early in the first half and conceded two during his time on the pitch, although there was little he could do about either. 4.

Dominic Solanke – Igor Tudor looked to change things by introducing Solanke in place of Kolo Muani, who had been underwhelming in the first half. After coming on, he had a half-chance following a Kevin Danso long throw, but did not make clean contact. Later in the second half, he found himself one-on-one with Oblak and finished well after Porro played him through. 7.

Conor Gallagher – The former Atletico Madrid man came on for Mathys Tel just after half-time and did not have much influence on proceedings in the final third for Tottenham. 5.

Joao Palhinha – The Portuguese replaced Richarlison after the Brazilian was booked. N/A.

Xavi Simons – Came on for Djed Spence in the final minutes of the game and went straight to the midfield while Gray played at left back. N/A.
