Popular Comedy Returns To Streaming Three Years After Box Office Success
Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman's critically acclaimed indie comedy Theater Camp is coming back to Hulu on March 15 after it was removed from streaming in 2024.
The film had a limited theatrical release in 2023, during which it pulled in $4.4 million across just 700 theaters in the U.S. (via Box Office Mojo). This was a big success for the low-budget comedy, which then found a semi-permanent home on streaming.
Theater Camp originally landed on Hulu in 2023, but it was removed from the streamer in late 2024 during a mass content purge. The decision was described by Deadline as "cost-cutting measure as the industry is rethinking costs and strategy in that arena with a renewed focus on profitability."
Thankfully, Theater Camp is now returning to Hulu and Disney Plus as the platforms rethink their catalog once more.
Theater Camp follows the workers at a New York City theater group as they're forced to band together in order to keep the camp open after its beloved founder has fallen into a coma. The movie stars Molly Gordon, Ben Platt, Jimmy Tatro, Owen Thiele, and Noah Galvin in the main ensemble, with supporting performances from Caroline Aaron and Ayo Edebiri.
The film received widespread acclaim from critics following its premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. It was named by the National Board of Review among the top ten independent movies of the year, and received several Independent Spirit Awards—including Best First Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Noah Galvin's performance.
Theater Camp was also presented with the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award at Sundance, which helped the film secure theatrical distribution later in the year and ultimately find a reputable home on streaming.
The film will be available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. or Disney Plus internationally for viewers with a relevant subscription from March 15.
