Tears, hugs and scholarship joy flood social media in Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz – The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan has published the long-awaited list of recipients of state educational grants for the 2025–2026 academic year. Within minutes, social media feeds were filled with videos capturing the emotional reactions of prospective students.
Short clips posted online show genuine and touching moments: tears of joy, laughter through nerves, and tight hugs full of relief and happiness.

For many, checking the results was a heart-pounding moment. Some reviewed their scores surrounded by parents, siblings, or friends. Others stared at the screen in disbelief, struggling to accept the good news.

Many rushed to share their success, calling loved ones on the spot. Some couldn’t hold back their emotions and burst into tears.
According to official data, more than 74,000 people received state-funded places at universities this year — around 38,000 women and over 36,000 men.

Unsurprisingly, these videos have gained tens of thousands of views and shares, resonating with audiences who have faced the same stressful milestone in the past.

Many students shared their personal stories: some had been working toward this goal for years, others overcame academic challenges, and some balanced exam preparation with jobs and family responsibilities.

However, not all found their names on the list. Some expressed disappointment and surprise at the results. Under posts, comments often carried a more somber tone: a few missed the required score, others failed to secure a place at their desired university.

“In every university and program list — nothing. I guess I’ll apply for a paid place or try again next year,” wrote one commenter.

Applicants who are not in the main list still have chances — through redistribution, quota allocation, or scholarships from universities and private companies.
This year, about 113,000 people applied for state educational grants — more than last year’s 104,000. The most sought-after programs have remained the same for several years:

Pedagogical sciences
Engineering, manufacturing, and construction
Information and communication technologies

Many who missed out on a grant say they won’t give up — some plan to reapply next year, explore other universities or colleges, or enroll on a paid basis. Others are considering taking an academic year to prepare more thoroughly, finding motivation to keep moving toward their goal.
