Hurzeler performs U-turn on Arsenal "dark arts" as Gunners’ title credentials grow
Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler has revealed that he contacted Mikel Arteta to clarify his criticism of Arsenal following their recent Premier League meeting.
The two sides faced each other at the Amex Stadium on March 4, where Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory to maintain their strong position at the top of the Premier League table.
Hurzeler drew attention after the match when he criticised Arsenal for what he felt were time-wasting tactics during the contest.
The Brighton manager said at the time that such an approach was “not football” and insisted he would never try to win matches in that way.
Those comments generated discussion in the aftermath of the game, particularly given Arsenal’s reputation for progressive football under Arteta.
Speaking during his press conference ahead of Brighton’s trip to Sunderland, Hurzeler explained that he had already contacted Arteta privately to clarify the remarks.
The German coach stressed that his comments were not meant as a personal attack on the Arsenal manager or the club.
Hurzeler said he told Arteta directly that he has huge respect for the work being done at Arsenal and considers the Spaniard one of the top managers in the Premier League.
He added that he enjoys watching Arsenal play and admires several aspects of their style under Arteta.
The Brighton boss also told Arteta that if Arsenal go on to win the Premier League title this season they will deserve the achievement.
At the same time, Hurzeler admitted that the defeat left him emotional and influenced how strongly he expressed his opinion after the match.
He explained that he is someone who sticks to his principles and does not shy away from sharing his views even when they create discussion.
Hurzeler also confirmed that Arteta responded to the message and that the pair had a constructive exchange about the situation.
Both managers shared their perspectives on the match, with Hurzeler describing the conversation as respectful and positive.
He added that football often brings emotional reactions, especially when managers are defending their teams and viewpoints.
Despite the earlier criticism, Hurzeler insisted that he still admires Arteta’s work and wishes Arsenal well for the remainder of the season.
The Brighton head coach also provided squad updates ahead of the Sunderland fixture.
Kaoru Mitoma is a doubt after being substituted at half-time against Arsenal, although scans have shown no injury.
Hurzeler said the winger is dealing with pain and will be assessed before the match.
Meanwhile, Lewis Dunk and Solly March are both available again after missing the Arsenal defeat.
Dunk could also reach a milestone at Sunderland by making the 500th appearance of his Brighton career.
