Photographers are regular guys. In other words, they are subject to the same winters and summers as Shakespeare himself said in The Merchant of Venice. Yes, he was talking through Shylock about Christians but it is often good to see how we sometimes forget that people are just like other people. What does this mean for us? Aside from the regular issues that a person may face—financial problems, relationship difficulties, professional challenges, etc.—photographers, like other artists, can experience something like what St. John of the Cross referred to as “the dark night of the soul.” The cutthroat competition and the incessant loud voices of clients, suppliers, and other photographers can surely take its toll resulting in a photographer losing his or her drive and feeling that “the eye” has been closed.
