Odor intensifies at night: Shymkent searches for source of air pollution
Tengrinews.kz — Authorities in Shymkent are searching for the source of an unpleasant odor that residents mainly complain about at night, according to Otyrar.kz.
Residents say the strong smell becomes particularly noticeable at around 2–3 a.m. and makes it difficult to stay even indoors.
A special commission is working in the city to inspect possible sources of pollution. Specialists are monitoring air quality and checking whether industrial enterprises comply with environmental requirements.
During a recent inspection, they visited several large plants. Specialists assessed emission volumes, the operation of filtration equipment and possible exceedances of permitted limits. According to the Ecology Department, if excessive emissions are detected, an unscheduled inspection may be carried out at the enterprise. The commission will draw up a report based on its findings and decide on further action.
The on-site monitoring did not reveal signs of air pollution at the inspected facilities.
According to the television channel, 38 environmental inspections have been carried out in Shymkent since the beginning of the year. Enterprises were issued orders to correct identified violations, while the operations of four organizations were temporarily suspended.
Earlier, we reported that residents of Ust-Kamenogorsk regularly complain about the environmental situation and deteriorating air quality, sharing videos and photos on social media. In September, for example, the city was covered by a dense grayish haze, while some residents reported an unpleasant smell and throat irritation.
