Average speed monitoring system launched on Konaev–Bakanas highway
“The monitored section is 38 kilometers and 965 meters long. An important feature of this road is its variable speed limit. This means that the permitted speed differs on different sections of the route. Drivers should therefore pay close attention to road signs and comply with the speed limit on every section,” Aktoty Boranova, deputy head of a department of the Interior Ministry’s Administrative Police Committee, warned motorists.
According to her, cameras record the time when a vehicle passes control gantries at the beginning and end of the monitored section. The system then calculates the average speed based on the distance traveled and travel time.
“This means slowing down only before a camera will not work. If you exceed the permitted speed along the section, the violation will be recorded,” the Interior Ministry representative stressed.
She noted that the police aim is not simply to punish drivers.
“We want motorists to maintain a safe speed throughout the entire journey, not just in front of cameras. Speeding remains one of the main causes of serious highway accidents. Take care of yourselves and your passengers,” Boranova said.
The average speed monitoring system has been operational on Kazakhstan's roads since March 17, 2025. To date, it has covered 11 toll sections totaling nearly 3,000 kilometers: Astana – Shchuchinsk, Astana – Pavlodar, Astana – Temirtau, Shymkent – Kyzylorda, Shymkent – Taraz, Pavlodar – Semey – Kalbatau, Uralsk – Russian border (Saratov), Pavlodar – Russian border (Omsk), Almaty – Khorgos, Kokshetau – Petropavlovsk, and Aktobe – Kandyagash.
Starting October 21, motorists will be required to maintain the average speed limit on the Konaev–Taldykorgan highway.
