Whoever said you couldn’t teach old dogs new tricks must have been teaching the wrong dog. Recently, spoken word artist, art advocate, and educator Kooky Tuason invited me to join a little spoken word and performance art powwow at the Clayshop on Jupiter Street, a sort of studio, gallery, gathering nook, a real creative space in the heart of commercial Makati City. I’m not using the word powwow lightly, powwow having derived from the Native American word powwaw, a Narragansett word from the Algonquian tribe of Rhode Island. Powwaw means “spiritual leader,” and it seems apt as this little gig of ours wasn’t so much a gathering of people as it was a meeting of souls. We were to tape episodes one and two of the fourth season of Kooky’s spoken word show For Word and By Word.
