Recently, I read a report in The New York Times about how important daily exercise is to help us fight off colds and other infections. And I would add that the word “daily” is especially important. Many people exercise on weekends or once or twice a week, but it’s the daily exercise that counts most in maintaining good health. I swim every day—and I’m not even a particularly good swimmer. As a kid, I was afraid of water but in my mid-years, I decided that I needed to find something that I could do that did not require much stress and could be done when I grew old. I’m 91 now, and I still go out to the pool each morning around 7:00 or 7:30 and swim laps and also do leg stretches on the side of the pool. And I haven’t had a cold in many years.
