Predators captain Fisher hangs up skates after Cup final run
Nashville Predators captain Mike Fisher, the husband of US country music star Carrie Underwood, retired from the National Hockey League on Thursday, two months after Nashville's Stanley Cup Final debut.
"This is the hardest decision I've ever had to make, but I know I've made the right one," the 37-year-old Canadian center said in an open letter published in the Tennessean newspaper.
Fisher scored 18 goals and assisted on 24 others over 72 games last season in helping deliver the southern US country music capital's squad to the championship series, which it lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
"The way the city was behind us was unbelievable and that's what makes the memory such a high -- but also bittersweet," Fisher wrote.
"It's moments like that which I know I'll miss. This job I've been able to have for a majority of my life is so much fun."
Fisher scored 276 goals in 1,088 NHL career contests with the Ottawa Senators and Predators.
