Hamilton quickest in opening Canadian GP practice
Lewis Hamilton picked up on Friday where he left off in Monaco, topping the times ahead of rival and team-mate Nico Rosberg in an eventful opening practice at the Canadian Grand Prix.
The session was run on a "green" circuit following very little use and a long period of unseasonably cool and damp weather in Montreal, and it was interrupted when Brazilian Felipe Massa crashed heavily in his Williams.
He was unhurt but the action was red-flagged to clear the track, Massa?s car appearing to be seriously damaged and likely to require a replacement gearbox.
The defending three-time world champion Hamilton, who claimed his first win in seven months when he triumphed in Monte Carlo in May, clocked a fastest lap in one minute and 14.755 seconds, narrowly in front of Mercedes stablemate and championship leader Rosberg.
Hamilton, who has won four times at the demanding Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which severely tests brakes and traction, ended up 0.331 seconds ahead of Rosberg, who leads him 24 points in the title race.
Four-time champion Sebastian Vettel was third for Ferrari, using the Italian team?s upgraded engine with a new turbo, ahead of Dutch teenager Max Verstappen in his Red Bull.
Finn Kimi Raikkonen was fifth in the second Ferrari.
