Pilkington pleased with Silkmen progress
Macclesfield Town player of the year winner George Pilkington says he is very pleased with the success the club have found this season.
The Silkmen made the second round of the FA Cup and still have the final of the FA Trophy to play on May 21st, as well as managing a strong top-half finish just shy of the play-offs.
Speaking after the draw with Sutton on the final day of the National League season, the experienced defender said: “It’s been a fantastic season. It takes a couple of weeks to settle in and give you time to reflect, but obviously we’ve got the cup final to build for yet. It’s been very positive. The lads have worked very hard, as has the manager and the staff, and hopefully now we can go to Wembley and get a win.”
Macc face York in the final in three weeks, and Pilkington says the gap between now and then is all about conditioning.
He said: “This couple of weeks gives everybody a chance to get themselves fit and keep rested and build into the game. We’ve just got to make sure we’re in peak condition heading into the game.
“It is a weird period – three weeks without a game is quite a long time – but we’re just trying to make sure we don’t get rusty.
“York are a good team and we’ve seen the quality that they’ve got. Halifax won the cup last year and they were relegated too, so it’s all about how you perform on the day. Football is only fun if you’re winning though, and that’s what we’ll be looking to do.”
