Can Universal Basic Income REALLY Save Us? Free Money After Coronavirus Makes Millions Unemployed.
The pandemic did change my view on UBI a bit. I've always thought it would be necessary at some point, but because it's so expensive, wasn't sure how that was going to get done. That part still has to be figured out (of course there are plenty of ideas) and make sure any new taxes aren't regressive, defeating the point. I like the idea of everyone getting the same UBI but I question whether that makes sense. Seems like at least the top 10% of earners benefit very little, but that's (according to the figures in this video) 300B Would be nice to direct that elsewhere if possible. That said, I also think it's crucial that this is a lean process, not expensive to administer, so if it saves 300B to limit who gets the UBI, then it better not cost 50B to figure out who to send checks to. I look forward to a day where we have the freedom to experiment with our careers and not worry about the roof over our head while doing so. America is unique in its passion for innovation and entrepreneurship and I only see UBI encouraging even more of that. We may as well play to our strengths.
