Man dies after falling into grain silo

PALMETTO, La (KLFY) -- In St. Landry Parish, a tragic incident resulted in the death of a Vidrine man.
According to St. Landry Parish authorities, the body of 57-year-old David Fontenot was recovered from grain silo after he fell in it. Fontenot fell into a grain silo while working in the Bayou Rouge area in Palmetto on Monday afternoon.
News 10 spoke with a volunteer firefighter who told me there are no trainings or regulations when it comes to working in conditions with silos.
In video footage, emergency medical services are seen retrieving Fontenot from the silo. Authorities say it took EMS rescue teams several hours to extract Fontenot's body from the silo.
A volunteer firefighter who wishes to remain off camera says he helped during the rescue and what happened Monday afternoon was devastating. Reports of the fall happened when another employee called for help after not seeing Fontenot since he'd gone to check the silo.
Once firefighters and rescue teams arrived, they immediately began rescue efforts but were unable to retrieve Fontenot until 9 p.m. that night.
The volunteer firefighter says there usually isn't any training for people working with silos. And because of the recent incident, there will be a training at the end of the month for his fire department in order to be better prepared for similar incidents. Since the incident, repairs are being made to the silo and grain has been removed.
