Headaches for homeowners — are you prepared for the next freeze?
Freezing temperatures are heading towards Central Texas once again, but are you ready?
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Freezing temperatures are heading towards Central Texas once again, but are you ready?
Unfortunately, the colder weather means a lot of headaches for some homeowners.
"Everything spiked all at once," Vic Fredlund, HVAC manager of Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning and Electrical, said.
Fredlund said plumbers with Abacus received increased calls last week when temperatures dropped below freezing. One major issue was busted pipes which can lead to flooding and major damage.
"Over the last few years, Austinites have witnessed firsthand the kind of damage these freezing temperatures can cause in homes," Fredlund said.
Fredlund said preparing before a freeze is important.
"Know where your water shutoff is," Fredlund said. "Know that you can turn the valve and that it is not ceased up, because if you do have a break you need to shut the water off."
You can usually find the water line outside your home near the street, but if not locate them as soon as you can.
"If you have exposed pipes on a tankless water heater outside or somewhere inside and water softener loops in the garage make sure they are insulated," Fredlund said.
A quick walk around your property to cover any exposed pipes or faucets can also help.
"If it is getting cold enough, have a couple of faucets in the house drip," Fredlund said.
