Alaska Airlines cuts Austin-California route citing low demand
For the second time in about a month, Alaska Airlines has cut a nonstop route from Austin.
AUSTIN (KXAN) — For the second time in about a month, Alaska Airlines has cut a nonstop route from Austin.
Flights to San Jose, California, will end on March 13.
"Demand for Austin has been down overall," an airline spokesperson told KXAN. "As a result, we have decided to stop our flights to AUS from SJC."
San Jose is also served direct from Austin-Bergstrom by Southwest Airlines. Alaska's daily flights will continue between Austin and San Francisco, which is a focus city for the airline's growth on the West Coast.
Alaska previously announced it would cut service between Austin and Boise, Idaho, with the last flight operating on Feb. 15.
Alaska is the fifth-largest airline operating at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, based on passenger totals. Between January and November 2023, the airline flew more than 800,000 passengers in and out of AUS, about 4% of all passenger traffic at the airport.
Several other route cuts at AUS have been announced in recent months. American Airlines said in November it would cancel 21 nonstop routes by early April. British airline Virgin Atlantic ended its Austin-London Heathrow route on Jan. 7.
