Longhorns softball blanks Ragin' Cajuns, Rams to stay undefeated
The Longhorns topped Louisiana 5-0 in their first game and then won 7-0 over Colorado State. They'll play the Rams again at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with a marquee matchup later that night against No. 12 Stanford.
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The No. 2 Texas Longhorns softball team moved to 10-0 with a pair of shutouts Friday during the Lone Star State Invitational at McCombs Field.
The Longhorns topped Louisiana 5-0 in their first game and then won 7-0 over Colorado State. They'll play the Rams again at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with a marquee matchup later that night against No. 12 Stanford.
In the win over the Ragin' Cajuns, freshman pitcher Teagan Kavan dazzled yet again. She struck out six and forced 12 flyouts in a complete game performance that took just 66 pitches, allowing two hits. Texas scored three runs in the third inning on a two-run single by Katie Stewart and a sacrifice fly by Joley Mitchell. The Longhorns had 10 hits with Mia Scott collecting three, including a triple. Viviana Martinez had two hits for the Longhorns as well.
Against the Rams, Texas catcher Reese Atwood crushed a pair of home runs, giving her seven already this season. She was tied for No. 5 in the country in home runs with five coming into the game and moved into a tie with Rutgers' Katie Wingert for the national lead. Atwood hit a 2-run homer in the first inning and added a solo dinger in the third.
Atwood, Martinez, Victoria Hunter and Kayden Henry each had two hits for the Longhorns. Hunter drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the seventh inning.
Mac Morgan and Sophia Simpson combined for the shutout. Morgan pitched five innings and allowed five hits with three strikeouts while Simpson tossed two innings and and didn't allow a hit.
