Hyundai coming to Austin to provide free anti-theft software upgrades
An anti-theft event hosted by Hyundai will be in Austin beginning Friday morning.
AUSTIN (KXAN) — An anti-theft event hosted by Hyundai will be in Austin beginning Friday morning.
The event will continue through Sunday at the Burger Sports Complex on Jones Road in southwest Austin to provide an anti-theft software upgrade, according to organizers.
There is no need to schedule an appointment, and the upgrade is free, according to Hyundai. Steering wheel locks will also be handed out, according to organizers.
KXAN has previously reported thieves targeted Kia’s and Hyundai's because of a "design vulnerability" making it easier to steal.
From November 2022 to November 2023, auto thefts in Austin increased by 63%, according to the city. While under 10% of cars registered in Travis County are manufactured by Kia and Hyundai, their cars account for more than a third of the stolen vehicles.
In January, Austin City Council passed a resolution urging the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall Kia and Hyundai models at most risk of being stolen.
