Stony Point falls short in 6A boys hoops title game 53-41 to Plano East
Stony Point (37-2) committed 20 turnovers in the game and the Panthers (40-0) cashed those in for 21 points. AUSTIN (KXAN) — A dream season for the Stony Point Tigers came to a disappointing end Saturday in a 53-41 loss to Plano East in the UIL 6A boys basketball state championship game at the Alamodome.
Stony Point (37-2) committed 20 turnovers in the game and the Panthers (40-0) cashed those in for 21 points. Villanova signee Josiah Moseley scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Tigers in the loss. He was the only Stony Point player to score in double figures, and the Tigers shot 40% from the field.
The Panthers held a big advantage at the foul line, connecting on 13 of 18 free throws. Stony Point was perfect from the line but only had four attempts. Stony Point was whistled for 17 fouls to Plano East's 10.
DJ Hall scored 18 points and had six rebounds for the Panthers, earning him game MVP honors. Rachard Angton had 13 points and Jordan Mizell scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds. Plano East had 28 points in the paint compared to Stony Point's 18, and the Panthers' bench outscored the Tigers' reserves 22-8. It's the first state championship for the Panthers in school history.
Stony Point's two losses this season were both to Plano East. The Panthers topped the Tigers 55-50 in December. The Tigers beat Beaumont United 54-46 in the semifinals to reach the first state title game in school history.
