AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Sandy Schumann said she has jump-started vehicles all her life. What she didn't know was that jump-starting one last week would lead her to take drastic measures, including peeling her own skin off, to get out of a bad situation.
Both of Schumann's arms got stuck under the hood of a truck while she was trying to jump the other vehicle, she told KXAN in an interview Tuesday.
"My hood slammed closed on both arms," she said. "I managed to basically peel my left arm out. It was pretty gross. It was just, it was scary. And I was like, 'I don't want to go out like this.'"
Schumann said she waited for three hours before attempting to get both her arms out from under the hood.
"I kind of started twisting and and wedging and my right arm tearing it a little more until I could get my foot around to reach the hood latch of my truck and thank the lord I was able to reach it. and when that popped I just went straight to my house and called 911," Schumann said.
While she was waiting for help, she said the thought of her kids is what kept her going. She said she didn't really feel the pain, even though her arm was "basically filleted."
Schumann has since had surgery and is now back at home recovering. Her next concern is the hospital bill.
Any viewers who would like to help can go to the GoFundMe fundraiser created by Schumann's daughter. A total of $7,696 was raised with a goal of $16,000 at the time this article was published.
Schumann said this is a reminder for people to take precautions when under a hood of a vehicle.
"You just never know," she said, "because I've jumped vehicles my entire life."
