Giant troll in Pease Park unveiled, named in presentation ceremony

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Pease Park troll was officially unveiled Friday, and its name is Malin.
The full name of the artwork, which was created by artist Thomas Dambo, is ‘Malin's Fountain." The name was selected based on the large bowl in Malin’s hands, which trail and troll visitors alike can fill with water as a way to keep the park’s wildlife hydrated.
Malin stands at about 18 feet tall and 15 feet wide and was made with recycled materials from a water tower at the J.J. Pickle research campus. Assembly for the troll began on March 1 and took two weeks to complete.
CEO of the Pease Park Conservancy Nicole Netherton talked about what makes this artwork an important part of the trail-going experience.
“I find it such an inspiration for joy because you see runners go by, or people with kids and they do a double take because it’s sort of unexpected to find a giant troll off of the trail, so I think it's a really special way to connect with the outdoors, the children really love it, and it gives them a chance to experience something larger than life,” Netherton said.
