Report: California leads as state where Texans are moving from — and also relocating to
About 668,000 people moved to Texas in 2022, according to the 2024 Texas Relocation Report from the Texas Realtors.
AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new report shows one West Coast state was the most popular place where Lone Star State residents moved from in recent years.
This state was also where most Texans moved to in 2022. Can you guess it?
Many new Texas residents moved from California — about 102,000 people — in 2022 followed by Florida and New York with the most Texas transplants, according to the 2024 Texas Relocation Report from the Texas Realtors.
In total, about 668,000 people moved to Texas in 2022, according to the report released Tuesday.
The relocation report used Census data from the 2022 American Community Survey. The data had a 90% confidence interval with various margins of error, according to the data.
Here's estimates of where most people moved from:
- California: 102,000
- Florida: 41,000
- New York: 30,000
- Illinois: 25,000
- Oklahoma: 25,000
- Colorado: 25,000
Reasons why people moved to Texas include lower costs of living, job opportunities with companies that expand or relocate to Texas plus options for large cities, small towns and rural areas in the state, according to Jef Conn, the Texas Realtors chairman.
California was also the top state where Texans moved to in 2022. The report said about 42,000 people moved to the Golden State from Texas.

How does this compare to previous years?
The Texas Realtors' 2023 report also named California as the top state where Texans moved from and relocated to. About 107,000 people moved from California in 2021, and over 33,000 people moved from the Lone Star State to California in the same year.
The Sunshine State was the second most popular state for people to relocate from with about 31,000 Floridians moving to Texas in 2021. About 28,000 Texans moved to Florida in the same timeframe.
Colorado followed this with about 30,000 people moving to Texas and roughly the same number of people — at just under 30,000 — moving back to the Centennial State.
Looking way back, about 65,000 people moved from California to Texas in 2015, and 42,000 Texans moved to California in the same year. The 2017 report from the Texas Association of Realtors found most Californians coming to Texas were leaving the Los Angeles area.
